Scuba mask and snorkelWhen you think about scuba diving, your imagination may take you to some beautiful coral reef in the Caribbean or an ocean dive off the coast of Australia. While these areas are of course hot spots for divers and probably do provide experiences that last a lifetime, they aren’t the only ones. In fact, there are many special places right here in the U.S. and we happen to have an amazing treasure right here in Broken Bow, OK.

If you have never visited this area, you may be thinking, “Scuba diving in Oklahoma?” Our answer to that is, “Yes!” While you may not be in teal-colored waters next to a coral reef, there is real beauty to be found in the waters of Broken Bow Lake. This freshwater lake, nestled along the Kiamichi Mountains has some of the most crystal clear water around. It runs deep and offers all kinds of valleys and rocky crevices to explore. With an average depth of 200 or more feet, there really are endless areas to dive.

Broken Bow Lake brings its own host of underwater life to observe and photograph. You are likely to find sunfish, crappie, large and smallmouth bass, channel catfish, flathead catfish, rainbow trout, and you may even catch a glimpse of a freshwater jellyfish. Some catfish in the area are known to weigh up to 65 lbs.! Diving in this lake also brings its own set of challenges. Temperatures can range from 50-90 degrees in the summer and 40-50 degrees in the winter. The lake bottom is also often covered with thick silt that could greatly reduce your visibility if disturbed. To avoid a potential accident, divers must also use a marker buoy and dive flag as there is heavy boat traffic in the lake.

Whether you want to explore the depths or stick to snorkeling the 180 miles of shoreline, Broken Bow Lake is a spectacular place to visit this summer. No matter your skill level or experience, nearby Broken Bow Scuba Service can also get you all set up for your dive.
