Road Trippin’ Tips
First, start out with a clean car. You will most likely gather all sorts of papers, wrappers and trash along the way so purge your car from all the accumulated junk at the start. The glove box in particular tends to be a catchall area so clean that out and make sure you have all your necessary documentation should you get pulled over.
Second, consider a full-vehicle inspection to make sure all the fluid levels are good, wiper blades are working and everything turns on and shuts off as it should. This pre-maintenance check-up could save you from an on the road disaster. Make sure your trunk is stocked with a tire iron, bottled water, fire extinguisher, first-aid kit and reflectors should you have to make a fix-it pit stop. Check the condition of your spare tire and have a roadside rescue number handy should you need to call professional help.
Third, if you are on a budget, calculate your gas mileage before you go so you can plan accordingly. This will help in deciding how many tourist detours you want to take along the way.
Fourth, if you are bringing kids, prepare ahead! Bring lots of snacks and drinks, games to play and music to pass the time. Many have their own personal devices these days but it may be fun to put them away and play some family scavenger hunt games along the way instead.
Fifth, to stay in touch with home and be reachable if you will be meeting up with friends, ask your cell phone provider about coverage areas and when you may be slapped with enormous roaming fees.
