There is already a buzz around Beavers Bend, OK, as people are gearing up for the Kiamichi Owa-Chito Festival of the Forest, a much-anticipated annual event coming up June 20-21, 2014. Whether you have been faithfully attending this event every year or are looking for a great reason to come down to our neck of the woods, this celebration is will be a highlight of the summer.

For more than 40 years this event has remained treasured as a family-friendly festival that centers on showcasing the culture, beauty, and heritage of Kiamichi Country. The “forest” comes alive with blast-from-the-past competitions that truly test the grit and determination of those daring enough to participate. The spirited competitions will include ax throwing, double buck sawing, and jack-n-jill crosscut. At the end of it all there is the sought after “Bull of the Woods” award given and this year a new “Crew of the Woods” will be handed out as well. Better bring your game!

This only scratches the surface of all that will be going on during this three-day festival. The professional lumberjacks of The All American Lumberjack Show will put on a showstopper with springboard tree topping, chainsaws, log rolling and quick-carve events. It is truly spectacular to watch these talented artists in action.

The Freemans and Weston & Christy Hinson headline the gospel music Friday night, Jim Lauderdale brings bluegrass to town all Saturday afternoon and Daryle Singletary will be rocking out country music as the headliner Saturday night. Among the main events you will also find cultural demonstrations, talent shows, turkey calling contests, photography contests, canoe races, archery and horseshoe competitions, a domino tournament, 5K race, and more. There will also be an art show with over 300 works of art and will feature pieces by Peggy Epner of Allen, TX.
