person fly-fishing in a riverFishing is such a wonderful hobby—an outing requiring minimal equipment that can be done anywhere fish are to be found. Whether wading on the side of a river, paddling across a lake in a canoe or hanging off the edge of a commercial boat reeling in the big one, casting a line just never gets old. Anyone can take part—young and old, amateur or professional and Beavers Bend in McCurtain County, OK just happens to be a prime fishing destination.

Dropping a line in our beautiful piece of the world never disappoints. The fish are almost always biting and if you have to wait a bit, you will not find yourself in more beautiful a backdrop as the Ouachita Mountains. Broken Bow Lake in particular as 180 miles of shoreline and with 14,200 acres and some of the cleanest and clearest water you will ever see, it is truly a fisherman’s paradise. There is an average depth of 62 feet and rocks, timber and off shore structures make this lake an exciting place to fish for the beginner and can test the skills of the more experienced. This lake is known for black bass fishing but other popular species you may find on your line include crappie, catfish, walleye and various sunfish.

The Mountain Fork River is an area dedicated to fly-fishing. Flowing down from the Ouachita Mountains, this area is stocked year-round with rainbow and brown trout. There is a four-mile stretch of the river that is completely closed off to boats and barbed hooks where you just may snag a 17-lb brown trout on your line. It is an exciting place to fish where you will meet other enthusiasts with the same passion for fishing and just being out in the great outdoors.

If you are new to the area and would like some instruction or the inside scoop on where the “honey holes” are, a guide service such the Three Rivers Fly Shop is an excellent place to start. They have a variety of classes and schools to teach you what you need to know about fly-fishing. Then you can go on your way or sign up for a half or full-day guide. It is important to mention that a 2014 fishing license is required for all residents and non-residents (unless exempt) who fish here.
