At Beavers Bend Creative Escapes, we are fortunate to have the beauty of Oklahoma fall foliage right outside the front door of our cabins. There is something relaxing and peaceful though about taking a “Sunday afternoon” type road trip to see the outdoors from a different perspective. There are a couple specific highways and byways that are known to provide some of the best views in Oklahoma. So, grab your camera, fill up your gas tank, and get ready to hit the open road.

Kiamichi Trace – This is a beautifully scenic stretch of road on U.S. Highway 271 that works its way through Oklahoma’s southeast region, known as Choctaw Country. The Kiamichi Trace follows the Kiamichi River, and gives you a glimpse into where the Native Americans traveled as it extends into three different counties. The rugged mountains, the beautiful rivers, and dense pine forests provide a captivating sight that make a leisurely road trip absolutely worth it—especially at this time of the year when the fall hues are as vibrant as can be. You can read about a detailed road trip tour that starts south of Grant, OK and takes you through Hugo, Sulphur Canyon, Honobia, Clayton Lake State Park, Tuskahoma, and more.

Talimena Scenic Drive – National Scenic Byway – While beautiful in any season, the Talimena Scenic Byway offers particularly scenic views during the fall season. It was actually built specifically to highlight the area’s beautiful foliage. You will twist and turn your way through the one of the highest mountain ranges around: the beautiful Ouachita Mountains in southeast Oklahoma. This 54-mile drive is actually Oklahoma’s best-known scenic highway. Between Talihina, OK and Mena, AK, it snakes its way through the Ouachita National Forest. There are numerous viewpoints and scenic turnoffs, as well as 22 designated vistas so keep your camera ready as you will have beautiful reds and golds as far as the eye can see. If you are an outdoorsy type of person, there are many spots along the way to take advantage of a variety of outdoor adventures.
