What to Know about the Total Solar Eclipse
First off, what is a total solar eclipse? This natural phenomenon occurs when the moon passes between the sun and Earth, completely blocking the sun’s face. On April 8, the eclipse will start around 12:18 p.m. with a particle eclipse. The total solar eclipse will take place around 1:45 p.m. and last about five minutes.
During this time, the sky will be the same darkness it would be at dusk or dawn, and temperatures can drop. Animals often go silent as well, so don’t be surprised if suddenly you don’t hear wildlife.
It’s important to stay safe while watching the eclipse. Except for the brief total phase when the moon completely blocks the sun, you should never look directly at the sun without eye protection designed for solar viewing. You can either buy special eclipse glasses or make your own viewer.
