If you thought of birds, then you have really earned your nature stripes! The Red Slough Birding Convention in Idabel, OK is coming up May 3-6, 2014 and this just may the exact spring adventure you have been hoping for.

Those of us who live down in Idabel or Broken Bow, OK are quite spoiled—we have the most spectacular scenery right out our back doors that is full of amazing wildlife. Countless species of birds just happens to be one reason that nature lovers visit our area and visitors who are surprised by the sight of amazing birds can’t wait to come back. The Red Slough Wildlife Management area is an 8,000-acre home to over 315 species of birds and a myriad of animals and plants rare to the region. The Red Slough is a favorite of bird-watchers but the common sightings of rare, beautifully colored birds just might make you a dedicated bird watcher after your visit here.

This convention, carefully planned at the height of spring migration will offer visitors guided tours of the Red Slough Wildlife Management Area, Little River National Wildlife Refuge and McCurtain County Wilderness Area. Organizers of this great event say that it is not unusual to see over 100 species of birds in a single day! That’s pretty amazing. Expected birds of interest include:  Purple and Common Gallinule, King Rail, Anhinga, Black-bellied Whistling Duck, White Ibis, White-faced Ibis, Hudsonian Godwit, Black-necked Stilt, Bell’s Vireo, Marsh & Sedge Wrens, Painted Bunting, Mottled Duck, Glossy Ibis, Virginia Rail, and Yellow-headed Blackbird.  American Alligators are often seen on this tour!
