The legend of the Bigfoot has been a part of our culture for many years. There is of course quite the controversy surrounding this “Wildman.” Did you know that the first written account of such an encounter was way before the time of Christopher Columbus, in 986 AD when Leif Erikson and his men landed in the new world. Accounts share that they saw creatures who were “horribly ugly, hairy, swarthy and with big black eyes.” Whatever the truth is, the stories, legends, excitement and curiosity around Bigfoot have set the stage for a wonderful annual event, the Honobia Bigfoot Festival.

Honobia is a picturesque community surrounded by vast tree plantations in the heart of the Kiamichi Mountains. It is here that the annual Bigfoot Festival takes place, where the supposed first sightings of Bigfoot were. It will be taking place October 3-4, 2014 and whether you are a true believer, curious about what people have to say or just want to have some fun, you need to come on out to this event. Over the course of the two days you will be treated to some great live music, shop vendors with handcrafted arts and crafts, enjoy family-friendly games, eat great food and see the fantastic art on display by local artisans.

There will be several musical performances and live acts as well as presentations by prominent Bigfoot researches. This year’s guest speakers include Dr. Jeff Meldrum, Scott Nelson, and Professor Marvin Leeper. There will be some Q&A sessions as well where you can ask about their personal experiences and maybe even share some of your own! A Friday night campfire will be held and everyone will be encouraged to share his or her own tales and experiences. On Saturday, the 5K Big Foot Run will take place at the Little River Speedway and the Big Foot Shakedown takes place on the dirt track that evening. There will also be the Big Foot Karaoke Music Idol contest so get ready to show off your skills!

This festival is just the perfect excuse to make your way over to our beautiful area for a time of fun and relaxation.
